How Much Does It Cost to Start a Print-on-Demand Business?
The itemized startup bill: Etsy fees, one design subscription, free tools, no ads in month one, plus the per-sale economics that decide what you keep.

A print-on-demand business costs under $100 to start, and the realistic month-one budget in our course is $50: Etsy's one-time set-up fee, a handful of $0.20 listing fees, and one month of a design-asset subscription. No ads, no premium tools, no course purchases. There is no inventory to buy, because your production partner only prints after a customer pays. The real cost is hours of research and listing work spread over months, since first revenue arrives in months and a realistic first year is tens of dollars a month that compounds as the catalog grows.
All of it comes from the launch plan and money lessons of our print-on-demand course. Here is the bill, itemized.
The month-one budget: about $50
The course's thirty-day plan, Your first thirty days, names the budget and refuses to inflate it.
Etsy set-up fee. A one-time charge to open the shop, listed in Etsy's fee schedule.
Listing fees. $0.20 per listing, and the plan publishes ten to fifteen designs in week three, so call it a few dollars.
One month of a design-asset subscription. Fonts, graphics, or the design tool of your choice, one month only.
Free tools. The USPTO trademark search is free. ERank and Everbee both have free tiers for niche validation. Your production partner's mockups are included. Browser extensions for best-seller ranks are free.
That is the whole list. The plan's explicit rule: no ads in month one, no premium tools, no course purchases.
What a sale pays you
Starting costs end there, but the per-sale economics decide whether the business works, and What the money looks like takes one shirt apart line by line. A $21.99 tee through a budget production partner: about $7 base shirt cost, about $4.50 shipping you cover, roughly $1.43 in Etsy transaction fees at 6.5 percent, about $0.91 in payment processing at 3 percent plus $0.25, and the $0.20 listing fee. You keep about $7.95.
The premium partner costs more, about $12.95 for the standard Bella+Canvas 3001 blank at Printful, closer to $9 on its paid Growth plan, versus $6 to $8 at Printify's cheaper providers. Work the math in reverse before listing anything: decide your lowest acceptable margin per sale, add up base cost, shipping, and the fee stack at your intended price, and if the answer is under your floor, raise the price or do not list the design.
One fee to plan for later. Etsy's Offsite Ads take 15 percent of a sale when Etsy advertises your listing and it converts. Under $10,000 in trailing 365-day revenue you can opt out in your settings. Cross $10,000 and the rate drops to 12 percent but participation becomes mandatory for the life of the shop, even if sales fall back below the line.
Costs that show up later
Most are optional, and the course is picky about which ones earn their slot.
Paid tool tiers. The free tiers of eRank and Everbee carry validation. Pay only when the catalog is large enough that faster research saves real hours.
A second design subscription month. Same test. If week three's designs came from validated niches, month two might justify another month of assets.
Nothing else is required. No inventory, no shipping costs before a sale, no storefront lease. The production partner handles production and fulfillment out of the customer's payment.
The real cost is time
Expect roughly two hours a day of niche validation, design production, and listing work during the launch month, per the course's real-week lesson. Trademark checks run ten seconds to a minute per phrase, every phrase, no exceptions, and skipping them is the expensive decision in this business: a single intellectual property complaint can terminate a Merch on Demand account immediately, with royalties withheld, and the catalog you spent a year building disappears with it.
When money comes back
Marketplaces disburse on their own schedule, typically days to weeks after a sale. Nobody hands you cash the day a shirt sells. Month one might be two sales from a stranger. Median Etsy sellers make a few hundred dollars a month in revenue before costs, sellers clearing $1,000 a month are roughly the top ten percent, and they usually got there after a year or more of catalog building. Give the shop six months of real craft before judging it, and if it earns less than your monthly tool costs after that, the course's honest exit is to leave the catalog earning passively and redirect your energy.
Every number here is sourced in the free print-on-demand course, which ships the niche validation tracker and the trademark check log. If you are comparing this against the other businesses you can start for under $100, the startup quiz lines them up by budget and timeline.
