Companion to the lesson "Build the Engine."

Engine piece this week:   Date:

The hub

One long-form engine piece per week at a quality bar you can hit every single week. The two questions that set the bar: does this help one specific person, and would the tenth piece in this series still be worth making? If a format is only good once, it is a stunt, not an engine.

The spokes (cut, don't recreate; six to ten surfaces, none with fresh creative work)

SurfaceCut ruleDone
Short clips (2-4)The strongest 30-90 seconds; captions burned in because much feed viewing happens on mute
Post or threadCarries the core argument; written from the outline in ten minutes
Newsletter versionThe essay itself, or the episode summary with the link
Community questionAsks the audience a question the piece raised
Evergreen pageFull piece on your site, so search can find it for years

The rule, printed

Surfaces point home. Every clip, post, and episode description carries the same call to action, the one that trades a lead magnet for an email address. Surfaces that circle back to the platform build the platform's business. Surfaces that point to your list build yours.

Format reminder (pick once, keep it)

If you are...The engine is...The surfaces are...
Good on camera, energized by talkingA weekly long-form videoClips, Shorts, a written recap, community posts
Voice-first, thinks out loudA weekly audio showTwo clips per episode, a show-notes essay, thread versions
A writer who hates recordingA weekly essayNewsletter version, posts built from each section, read-aloud audio

Batching: plan four pieces at a time on one slow evening; record or write in blocks. Choose the primary platform by where your audience already spends attention, and treat every other platform as a surface only. Repurposing is not lazy: most of your followers miss any given post, and big creators rerun their best material openly because it keeps working.
