Flip Phones for Profit
Phone-Flipping 30-Day Launch Checklist
Companion to "Your First Thirty Days."
Assumptions from the plan: $200 to $400 of working capital, 5 to 10 hours a week, no prior experience. The single most important feature is what you do not do in week one: buy nothing.
Week 1: build the machine, touch no money
- Set up the accounts: eBay, Swappa, Facebook Marketplace, a payment app for local sales
- Bookmark the verification stack: free IMEI checker, CTIA stolen phone checker, carrier bring-your-own-device pages, one paid IMEI report service for financing checks
- Read your jurisdiction's secondhand-dealer rules; if a license or holding period applies, fold it into the plan now
- Open the separate checking account
- Build the tracker and dashboard; print or save a bill-of-sale template
- Practice appraisals: five phones a day from marketplace listings, full method on each (exact model, sold comps, condition match, computed max offer); thirty-plus appraisals by Sunday
Week 2: source and make your first buy
- Write the buy ad in the plain format; post in two or three local venues, morning and evening
- Answer every serious text with the five screening questions
- Target: one, possibly two buys in the $50 to $150 range (cheap, clean, paid-off, unlocked)
- Run the full verification stack at the meetup; complete the bill of sale; list within 24 hours
If no phone passes your screens this week, that is the system working. A dry week of sourcing is normal; a forced buy is how duds happen.
Week 3: sell, ship, and repeat
- Accept reasonable offers; ship same or next day; IMEI photo before packing; tracking kept
- Answer every buyer message within a day (first feedback scores are worth more than first profits)
- With cash returning, make the second and third buys, slightly more ambitious if the first flips went clean
- Keep at least a third of capital in cash as discipline
- Update the Sunday dashboard without fail; two data points are already a trend line
Week 4: review like an operator
- Written answers: average net per flip? average days to sell? losses booked, and from verification misses, pricing misses, or plain variance? what would I do differently?
- Set month two's plan: capital target, buy price ceiling, target flips
- Decide deliberately: continue, pause, or adjust (all three legitimate; the only bad outcome is drifting into month two without a review)
Checkpoint-gate diagnostics
Zero buys by day 21. Problem is sourcing volume: post more ads, in more groups, at more times of day.
Bought but nothing sold by day 30. Problem is pricing: recheck comps, cut to the floor, switch lanes.
Sold but net per flip under $30. Problem is buy price: your max-offer math is too generous; tighten the target profit in the formula.
Throughout: dashboard updated every Sunday, no rule broken twice.
