Shop setup that does not need redoing

Etsy shop setup is an afternoon, and doing it deliberately once saves weeks. Name the shop for a niche direction rather than a pun you will outgrow. Complete every policy field: processing time matching your production partner's real handling time, a returns policy you can live with, and shipping modeled on what your partner actually charges. Etsy deposits sales to your bank on a rolling schedule, so connect a real business checking account, not the household one.

Register the production partner properly. Etsy requires sellers using manufacturing partners to disclose them on listings, and the setup asks for the partner's name and location. Printful, Printify, and the others are all known entities here; this is a routine declaration, not a confession. What Etsy does not allow is reselling designs you did not create. The Creativity Standards expect your own designs, which this course has had you making from the start.

The fee stack in practice

You met the arithmetic in What the money looks like. Here is the stack as you will see it hit your statement. Per Etsy's fee schedule, a $21.99 shirt carries a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the total including shipping, and US payment processing of 3% plus $0.25. Renewals after four months cost the listing fee again. Opening the shop costs a one-time set-up fee, commonly $15 for new US shops. And Etsy's Offsite Ads program adds 15% on attributed sales while you are under $10,000 in trailing 365-day revenue; you can opt out in your settings until you cross that line, and once you cross it, the rate drops to 12% and participation is locked in for the life of the shop. Read your monthly statement line by line for the first two months. Etsy is not hiding fees, but the statement is where you learn which ones touch you.

On ads: Etsy Ads is the in-house pay-per-click system, and you control only the daily budget, not bids. Operators' honest consensus is that ads amplify listings that already convert and quietly drain budgets on listings that do not. A dollar a day on your three best listings teaches you more than fifty dollars a day on all of them. Do not buy traffic to solve a relevance problem.

Reviews are shop-wide, so care is strategy

On Etsy, reviews attach to your shop, not just one product. A one-star review written by one annoyed buyer sits visibly across your store and drags every listing's conversion. That asymmetry, more than kindness, is why experienced Etsy sellers refund quickly and answer messages fast.

Response speed matters to buyers directly: Etsy surfaces your typical reply time, and shoppers in gift-buying mode message before purchasing, especially for personalized items. Build a simple habit from day one: messages answered once in the morning, once at night. The full customer-care playbook comes later in the course.

The first sale

New shops get a mild freshness look from the algorithm, and then performance takes over. Your job in the first month is listings: twenty to fifty of them, built the way Finding niches that buy and Building a listing that gets found taught, because a shop with five listings gives search almost nothing to work with. Most first sales arrive through long-tail search, a buyer typing a phrase only your listing matches.

Expect the first weeks to be silent. That silence is normal and the sellers who quit misread it as verdict. The catalog is the strategy, and catalogs take months.

Traffic is only half the game, though. The other half is the calendar.
