Lesson video in production

The full lesson text below is complete — the video version lands with launch.

Junk removal customers are not loyal to brands. They search once, in a mild panic, with a garage that must be empty by Saturday. Your entire marketing job is to be findable in that moment and fast when they call. The good news: the machine that finds these customers is mostly free and mostly an afternoon of setup.

The free machine, in order of importance

Google Business Profile. This is the storefront. Claim it, verify it, and fill every field: service area, hours, phone, photos. Then feed it weekly with before-and-after photos from real jobs, swept-garage shots, the trailer packed clean. Your listing ranks with proximity, completeness, and review velocity, and it is where "junk removal near me" money lands. Twelve reviews with photos beats any ad budget a new operator can spend.

Nextdoor and neighborhood Facebook groups. Where "anyone know a guy who hauls?" gets asked weekly. Answer as the local business, quote helpfully in the comments, and let the neighbors vouch. Free, hyperlocal, and pre-filtered for proximity, which matters when your profit lives and dies on drive time.

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. List a service post, keep it fresh, and attach your resale listings to the same account. The person buying your $75 dresser learns you also haul.

The truck itself. Door magnets, a clean rig, and a trailer that looks professional parked in driveways. Every job markets into its own neighborhood.

Realtors, property managers, landlords. The repeat engine. One realtor with active listings can mean five to ten jobs a season, and they need haulers who show up on time far more than they need the cheapest. Outreach is a numbers game of short, specific messages. Adapt this to email or text:

Hi (name), I run a local junk removal outfit and I work with a few agents on pre-listing cleanouts. Garage empty, photos-ready, usually within 48 hours of the call. If you ever have a listing that needs clearing before photography, I'm the call that shows up. Can I send a one-page rate card?

Send ten a week. Two reply, one books, and in a season that agent feeds you steady work while the cost stays at zero.

The paid machine, priced honestly

Paid leads work, and they are priced. Know the numbers before you spend.

Google Local Services Ads put you at the very top of search with a Google Screened badge, pay per lead. Benchmarks for junk removal run $30 to $65 per lead, about a $48 average (the median runs higher, near $58). At a 50 percent close rate and a $300 average job, a $48 lead is excellent arithmetic. At a 20 percent close rate, it is a slow leak. Track your own close rate weekly and pause the channel the week it sours.

Thumbtack and shared-lead marketplaces charge less per lead, $18 to $55, but sell the same lead to several competing pros, so the effective cost per actually-booked job runs much higher, on the order of $150 to $380. Use it in month one for reps and reviews if at all, and treat first contact speed as the entire game, because you are racing four other quotes.

Speed and the phone

Speed-to-lead decides this trade. Reply inside fifteen minutes during work hours and you will book a share of jobs that shocks slower competitors. Miss the evening window and the customer books whoever answered. The booking call is short because the sale is simple, and it follows one shape:

"Thanks for calling (business name), this is (you). What are we hauling? ... Got it. A couple photos help me quote it exactly, you can text them to this number. From what you're describing, that sounds like my half-load, three hundred fifty plus disposal at cost, and I could be there Thursday morning or Saturday. Which works better?"

Volume price, disposal pass-through, two time options. Answer the phone standing up. It shows in your voice.

The review engine

After the sweep, before you leave the driveway, ask: "Would you mind leaving a Google review? It's how a small outfit like mine gets found." Ask in person, while the clean garage is visible behind you, then text the direct review link an hour later. Most say yes to a person and no to a text alone. Ten reviews in your first two months changes your phone's volume more than any spend in this lesson.

The customers exist and the machine exists. What kills new operators is the season when the phone slows and the money system was never built.
