Your First Thirty Days

Lesson video in production

The full lesson text below is complete — the video version lands with launch.

Everything in this course compresses into one month of deliberate work. The plan below assumes two hundred to four hundred dollars of working capital, five to ten hours a week, and no prior experience. Its single most important feature is what you do not do in week one: buy nothing.

Week 1: build the machine, touch no money

Set up the accounts: eBay, Swappa, Facebook Marketplace, a payment app for local sales. Bookmark the verification stack: the free IMEI checker, the CTIA stolen phone checker, the carrier bring-your-own-device pages, and one paid IMEI report service for financing checks. Read your jurisdiction's secondhand-dealer rules per "Records, Taxes, and Stolen-Phone Law," and if a license or holding period applies, fold it into your plan now. Open the separate checking account. Build the tracker and dashboard from "Capital Velocity," and print or save a bill-of-sale template.

Then practice appraisals without buying. Take five phones a day from marketplace listings and run the full "Price Any Phone in Five Minutes" method on each: exact model, sold comps, condition match, computed max offer. By Sunday you will have appraised thirty-plus phones and you will already spot the overpriced listings on sight. That skill is worth more than anything you could buy this week.

Week 2: source and make your first buy

Write your buy ad in the plain format from "The Buying Conversation" and post it in two or three local venues, morning and evening. Answer every serious text with the five screening questions. Your target this week is one, possibly two, buys in the fifty-to-one-hundred-fifty-dollar range: cheap, clean, paid-off, unlocked phones. Small buys are where you want your early mistakes to happen. Run the full verification stack at the meetup, complete the bill of sale, and list within twenty-four hours per "The Listing That Sells."

Week 3: sell, ship, and repeat

Your week-two listings should be turning into sales now: accept reasonable offers, ship same or next day, IMEI photo before packing, tracking kept. Answer every buyer message within a day; your first feedback scores are worth more than your first profits. With cash returning, make your second and third buys, slightly more ambitious in price if your first flips went clean. Keep at least a third of your capital in cash as a discipline, so one stuck listing cannot freeze the whole machine. Update the Sunday dashboard without fail; two data points are already a trend line.

Week 4: review like an operator

The Sunday dashboard now has a month on it. Answer four questions in writing. What was my average net per flip? What was my average days to sell? What losses did I book, and did they come from verification misses, pricing misses, or plain variance? What would I do differently on the next thirty days? Then set month two's plan: capital target, buy price ceiling, target flips. Decide deliberately whether to continue, pause, or adjust. All three are legitimate outcomes of a properly run first month; the only bad outcome is drifting into month two without a review.

Checkpoint gates

Use these as diagnostics, not grades. If you have made zero buys by day twenty-one, your problem is sourcing volume: post more ads, in more groups, at more times of day. If you have bought but nothing has sold by day thirty, your problem is pricing: recheck comps, cut to the floor, switch lanes. If you have sold but your net per flip is under thirty dollars, your problem is buy price: your max-offer math is too generous, tighten the target profit in your formula. Each failure mode has a lesson in this course, and now you know which one to reread.

The thirty-day launch, condensed

Week 1: accounts, verification bookmarks, dealer-law check, tracker, bill-of-sale template, thirty practice appraisals, zero buys
Week 2: buy ads live in 2–3 venues, five-question screening on every offer, one or two small verified buys, listed within 24 hours
Week 3: every sale shipped next day with IMEI photo, third of capital held in cash, second and third buys made
Week 4: written review of net per flip, days to sell, losses, and month-two plan
Throughout: dashboard updated every Sunday, no rule broken twice

Thirty days from now you will either have a small working business with real numbers and a defensible process, or a clear, cheap answer that this trade is not yours. Both are wins over the person who is still watching flipping videos.
