Your Under-$1,000 Launch Kit

The under-a-thousand-dollars claim in this course's title is honest, with one assumption stated up front: you already own a working car and a phone. Everything else is small money, and almost none of it is urgent. Here is the kit, in the order you should buy it.

Buy before the first clean

A starter supply load. Disinfectant, glass cleaner, degreaser, toilet bowl cleaner, floor cleaner, dish soap, sponges and scraper pads, microfiber cloths in assigned colors, trash bags, and paper towels for final touches. Cleaning-industry startup guides teach color-coding the cloths (one color for kitchens, another for bathrooms, another for floors) so you never cross-contaminate a kitchen counter with a bathroom cloth. Consumables for a standard turnover run ten to thirty dollars when you supply them yourself (HomeGuide), and your first bulk buy will last many cleans if you buy concentrate and refill spray bottles.

A vacuum you trust. The single piece of real equipment. It lives in your car. A machine with a filtration system that traps fine dust rather than blowing it back into the air is the industry-standard recommendation for cleaning businesses, and it matters more in a guest-ready unit where every surface is photographed.

A caddy, a flat mop with disposable or washable pads, a toilet brush you replace often, and a small step stool. Function over brand. Nothing on this list needs to be pretty, only reliable.

Phone kit: a lockbox-code manager, a mileage tracker, and a photo routine. You will collect door codes the way a barista collects names. Write them down nowhere a guest could find them, and use the mileage tracker from day one, because tax season arrives for you too.

Buy as needed, not before

Linens. In most arrangements the host owns the linens and you change them. If you take laundry off-site, or a host wants you to supply a linen program, you will buy sheet and towel sets in multiples so one set is on the bed, one is clean, and one is in transit. Operators call this a par-stock rotation, and the full logistics get their own treatment later in the course. Do not front this cost until a paying host asks for it.

Laundry bags, a folding cart, gloves. Cheap, and you will know within two cleans exactly which ones you want.

The two fees that are not optional

Your background check. Marketplaces require one before you can bid on jobs. Turno, the largest, requires U.S. cleaners to purchase a background check and renew it yearly to stay active in its job marketplace (Turno for cleaners). Turno does not publish the price. Cleaners on host forums currently report paying about ninety dollars for it, and the number has moved before, so verify the exact cost when you sign up. Liability insurance. Not legally required to clean in most places, but hosts with units worth hundreds of thousands will and should ask. Cleaning businesses pay a median of about forty-eight dollars a month for general liability coverage, with house-cleaning businesses averaging about forty-four (Insureon). Why the budget holds

Add it up in the honest direction: a few hundred dollars of supplies and small equipment, a background check near ninety, a first month of insurance near fifty, and a gas budget. The total still sits far under a thousand dollars, because this business monetizes a body, a car, and a standard rather than equipment. That is also the honest weakness of the niche: the low fence in front means competitors arrive constantly, and the only durable asset you build is host trust. Buy cheap, start cleaning, let the contract list tell you when to spend.

The kit is physical. The paperwork that protects it is the other half of the launch, and none of it can be skipped.
