A dryer stops heating. The customer calls. You drive over, ask four questions, pull the machine apart far enough to test two components, prove which one failed, quote a price, and either fix it on the spot with a part from your van or order the part and come back Thursday. That is the whole business, repeated forty times a month at a scale you control.
Diagnose, source, fix, warranty
Every job has the same four moves. First you diagnose, which means finding the failed component with evidence, not guesswork. Then you source the part, which means knowing the model number, knowing who stocks the part in your town, and knowing what it should cost. Then you fix it. Then you stand behind the work, typically with a labor warranty of 30 to 90 days: Michigan's appliance repair law makes 30 the legal floor there, and some repair companies' published terms warrant labor for up to 90. The warranty is cheap to honor when the first two moves were done right.
Two of those four moves are where the money is made. Diagnosis is the skill customers are actually paying for; anyone can swap a part, but only a technician can prove which part to swap. Sourcing is the skill that protects your schedule; the operator who gets the right part on the first try works one visit per job while the guesser works two.
What this business is not
Three boundaries keep this course focused. This is not handyman work. A handyman fixes doors, patch holes, faucets, and a long list of small home problems; appliance repair is deep diagnosis of specific major machines. The two businesses share a customer but not a craft, and mixing them dilutes both.
Second, this is not appliance flipping. Buying broken machines, refurbishing them, and reselling them is a resale business with inventory risk, storage needs, and a completely different skill stack. Some appliance techs do both, but this course covers the service route only.
Third, this is not HVAC. Household refrigerators contain refrigerant, and touching the sealed system has a federal certification requirement we cover later in the course. Most common refrigerator repairs, including the majority that bring in revenue, never open the sealed system.
Why this work resists automation
This course carries a low AI exposure rating, and the reason is physical and legal at the same time. A language model cannot carry a dryer down a basement stairs, cannot smell a gas leak, cannot clip an amp clamp around a compressor wire, and cannot sign a liability release for a water line it disconnects. The diagnostic knowledge base is searchable, and good technicians use it daily. The hands, the tools, and the accountability are yours, and that is what the customer pays for.
The reputation machine is the compounding asset. An appliance household has six to ten machines, every one of which will eventually fail. Fix a dryer well once and you have a fair shot at the washer, the dishwasher, and the refrigerator for a decade, plus the neighbors. That is the entire customer acquisition strategy of most successful one-truck operations, and the rest of this course is built around it.
