Electricity, Gas, Refrigerant, and Your Back

Appliance repair is safe work performed around four genuine hazards. Nothing in this lesson is optional, and the disciplines here are repeated in small form throughout the jobs in this course. Read it once fully, then keep it within reach.

Electricity

Household appliances run on 120 volt circuits, and dryers and ranges run on 240. Both stop your heart; 240 does it faster. Ovens, microwaves, and some electronics also contain capacitors that hold a charge after unplugging.

Working wet is the other electrical killer: a laundry room floor with an inch of water on it is not a workplace until the supply is off. Ground-fault protected outlets around wet machines are code in modern homes; in old homes they are often absent, so your own discipline is the only protection.

Gas

Gas appliance servicing in scope means ignition components, valves, flame sensors, and burners, with the appliance isolated. Out of scope, permanently, is the supply piping behind the machine. Carbon monoxide is the invisible failure mode of badly burning gas appliances; a machine burning correctly has a steady blue flame, and a wavering yellow flame is a stop-work signal that calls for a combustion check beyond normal appliance repair.

Refrigerant

For the non-sealed refrigerator work that makes up most jobs, your refrigerant discipline is simple: do not puncture, do not bend, do not heat the sealed lines while working nearby, and know where they run. When a machine must be moved for disposal, it goes to a facility equipped for refrigerant recovery, not to the curb.

Your back, their floors

Water adds the last risk. Any time you disconnect a supply line, a leak or a failed valve afterward becomes your liability story. Operators close the house supply valve before disconnecting, inspect and replace worn hoses when reassembling, test the connection before leaving, and photograph the finished connection. Some carry a simple liability release for water line work. The few minutes this takes is cheaper than any deductible.

These four disciplines are the license the trade grants you to work alone in homes. What remains is the business of being chosen, and that is where the reputation machine starts turning.
